I also want to be useful to the other people, so I started to collect books and I wish that I can build a small library, so people could read my books collection. hopefully this activity will make the people and students in my village know that reading is fun , more useful than watching TV. I want them know that reading is the most simple way to develop our self and mind.

A LETTER (report) FROM MARDISIWI 2003
Dear Mr. Flokstra,
Thank you very much for your email, it was very nice to hear from you.
We are so happy and grateful with your plans for Mardi Siwi Orphanage which was just being realised at the beginning of 2003.
We are always fine here, and for their own future, the children are still going to school and are very excited to receive the donation from all the sponsors from the Netherlands through you.
The children are sleeping better now that they have nice bedding from you, and many are finding out the benefits of their library now that it is better stocked, none of which is not possible without your help.
The children are hoping for your continued support for their library and in particular, maybe you can help with books about the Netherlands. They are curious to know what it is like living in the Netherlands, and would like to learn more about things like historical building, football clubs, etc. and anything else interesting that you can think of.
We also would like to let you know that the children go to school on foot, and they will really appreciate it if there will be a sponsor from the Netherlands that can help with some bicycles so that they can use it for going to school.
We also want to let you know about the development of the building works :
- . Building works for office, kitchen and dining room has stopped, while waiting
for the continuing help from you,
- . The building of the sceptic tank is almost finished, just have to finish up the
cover,
- . The gas cookers have not been used yet since we haven’t got the gas cylinder.
And we are waiting for further instruction and help from you to continue with the works.
We are also sending you an email from one of the children named Risnawati.
That’s all from us for now, and thank you very much for everything that you have given and done for us, God bless you.
Send our warmest regards to all the Flokstra family in Holland, managerial and staff of KLM, and also the sponsors and their families. We miss you all.
Best regards, Mardi Siwi Yogya

A STORY BY RISNAWATI A GIRL FROM MARDI SIWI
I am a girl from a remote village in Tuban, East Java, and my name is Risnawati.
I was born from a very poor family, and my parents have 3 children. My father works as a farmer and his income was not enough to support the family, so I had to stop going to school. In July 1994, when I was in year 4 in primary school, I went away with a theology student, who was having a work experience at our church, to Mardi Siwi Orphanage in Yogyakarta, and that was 9 years ago, and to this day I still live here.
There was an experience that really stay on my mind. When I was in year 6 primary school, some of my friends and I sold newspapers ‘ Suara Pembaharuan’ at traffic lights in Yogyakarta from 3 to 7 p.m., and we were doing it for about 4 years. The incomes were used as our pocket money, because at that time Mardi Siwi Orphanage was almost closed down because of a lack of funding. But thanks God, God’s help always comes right on time, so the orphanage was not closed down.
In 1999 we stopped selling the newspapers because Indonesia was experiencing monetary crisis, so lots of the children couldn’t continue with their education and they were forced to became beggars, selling newspapers, and even selling drugs. And this has an impact to the children in Mardi Siwi, because some of our friends were influenced and misled. After I stopped selling newspapers, I then sold cakes and cookies for about 2 years, and I had to stop as well because I didn’t make any money.
Other experience is about our place and facilities in Mardi Siwi Orphanage, it started very modest. For until 1996, the orphanage only had 8 bedrooms, and there were 4-6 children in each room, and 3 staff for everybody.
In 1997, they started building a room at the back of the building, then kitchen, dining room, and an office followed. Even though it’s been built step by step, the condition in the orphanage was still very worrying because every year they have more and more children. We were always hoping and praying, until one day God listened to our prayers, and through Mr. Flokstra, we can renovate the kitchen, office, dining room and also build the sceptic tank. Besides that, we also got some help with kitchen utensils, pillow, bed spreads, pillow covers, and some presents like stationary, library books, soaps, etc.
And now there are 50 children who live in Mardi Siwi Orphanage, they came from all over Indonesia. I am very happy living here, because not only that I can go to school, but I can also learn to understand about some of my friends that came from East Java, Yogra, Central Java, West Java, South of Sumatera, North of Sumatera, West of Kalimantan, East of Kalimantan, and also Central of Sulawesi.
At the moment I am in my last year in Senior High School, and my plan is when I finish (July 2003) I want to continue my study in Theology in Jakarta, but I haven’t got the money to do it. I really dream to become a counsellor , to help the unfortunate people that live on the street, and I will really be grateful if there is anybody that can help me to realise my dream.
That’s all my story for now, thank you very much to Mr. Flokstra and family, and also all the sponsors who allow my story to be put in your magazine.
God bless you.
Best wishes,
Risnawati Mardisiwi, Yogya
